Bullying
Bullying is defined by the UK Government as behaviour by an individual or group, usually repeated over time, that is intended to hurt someone either physically or emotionally, and is often targeted towards certain individuals or groups, for example because of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. In schools, bullying can take many forms including verbal abuse, physical aggression, social exclusion, and cyberbullying through phones, messaging apps, and social media. It can have a serious impact on young people’s emotional wellbeing, leading to feelings of fear, anxiety, low self-esteem, and isolation. For some pupils, the experience of bullying can also affect attendance, concentration, and overall engagement with school life. Recognising the signs early and maintaining open communication between home and school is essential in ensuring that children feel safe, supported, and able to learn in a positive environment.
